What Is Acupuncture and Its Purpose?

What is Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a type of treatment modality that practitioners use to help reduce pain in patients. They are thin needles that are placed about 1-2 cm deep in the skin around the affected area.

The needles vary in size and length depending on what area of the body needs to be treated. Larger regions of the body such as the glutes and lower back need bigger needles and smaller areas of the body like the forearm and hand need smaller needles.

Purpose of Acupuncture

Once the needles get injected into the skin, oxygenated blood will go towards the affected area. This helps reduce inflammation, reduce pain and stiffness in the affected area.

How long should acupuncture be done: Acupuncture can be done for about 10-20 minutes.
